Supporting the Zebra Zone

We use yarn to do good and have a good yarn as we make!

We were asked to get creative and support the development of a 'Zebra Zone' around Allens Croft Primary School and Allens Croft Nursery School... to keep children safe between school and home.

In this small project, we enjoyed painting zebras as a group, while individual members made bunting,  a Zebra post box topper and painted temporary street signs.

This project is part of the emerging Cultural Action Area in Brandwood, bringing together the primary and nursery schools, Friends of Allens Croft Primary School, Friends of Dawberry Fields Park, Kings Heath Neighbourhoods’ Forum, our local councillors and other local residents to tackle concerns of safety in the school zone along Brandwood Park Road, Allens Croft Road, PIggy Lane and the park,

Welcome to the Zebra Zone

Where children feel safe between school and home.

The speed is much slower

the parking is better

the pavements are clearer

dog poo piles are fewer

the motorbikes gone from the park forever

our pride is much greater.

Let the black and white stripes remind you of all our right

to be safe in this area both day and night.

We are delighted to be able to contribute to this grass roots campaign.

What else is going on?

Traffic counts have been carried out of driving and parking issues outside the schools.

The counts took place between 8.30-9.15am on each occasion at the main entrance for both schools. They were undertaken by Cllr David Barker, Cllr Lisa Trickett and were supported by parents and community members.

Issues were counted in relation to the following:

 • Parking on the pavement

 • Parking on yellow/white lines

 • Parking on the zebra crossing

 • Speeding

 • Dangerous manoeuvres

 • Not stopping for zebra crossing

 The results were as follows:

• Friday 7 March: 34 issues
• Wednesday 9 April: 48 issues
• Friday 11 April: 48 issues
This is an average of 43 issues each morning during this 45 min time period.

The Zebra Zone was launched on Monday 28 April, with all the children coming to the primary school dressed in Black and White, and new banners using children’s artwork put up at strategic locations.

The results of three further traffic counts which happened during the last few weeks of term, using the same counting criteria were:

• Wednesday 30 April: Total: 14 issues
• Wednesday 7 May: 18 issues
• Friday 16 May: 17 issues

This is an average of 16 issues each morning during this 45 min time period.  That is a REDUCTION OF 63%!

Work will continue, but it shows what can happen when people come together to start grass roots campaigns.

Thank you to Selly Oak NNS for funding the Good Yarners elements of the project

The collaboration between schools and Our Scene CIC was funded with a microgrant through the Boosting Brandwood Cultural Action Area initiative to help promote the Brandwood Buzz.
